Space Coast Commemorates Space Shuttles

Jan 28, 2008. Space Shuttle models, similar to the one pictured above, line the streets of Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Palm Bay and Titusville. The Space Coast Tourism Development Commission (TDC) is sponsoring the development of large Space Shuttle models that businesses can put in front of their office to pay tribute to the Space Shuttle Program. The 15 foot tall statues went on display in 2008.

At the conclusion of the space program in 2010 Space Shuttle Astronauts will autograph the models and they will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.

"Much like Chicago has their cow statues and Washington, D.C. has their panda statues it is only fitting that the Space Coast should have Space Shuttles," said Jim Lewis, VP of Communications Concepts Inc.

The Space Shuttle Orbiter models are approximately 8 feet in size and come in a horizontal landing configuration. The models are made of fiber glass and are constructed locally by Stinger Fiberglass.
